Ah, the fruit of an almost three hour drive: "Road Closed". I'd grabbed my "Day Trips From Houston" guidebook, picked up Tim, fueled up and hit the road with the intention of finding Boykin Springs. The guidebook said that it had a rope footbridge over a wide creek, a five-point-one mile trail through the pine forest and even the remnants of an old sawmill. So up Hwy. 59 went, stopping at a What-a-burger in Livingston (what an experience that was! I joked to Tim I was tempted to whip out my camera and yell "Look, Tim! Hicks!!! and start firing off a bunch of shots". - but that's what I was afraid of - shots!) and further up and east to Zavala. After leaving Livingston we soon realized that the guidebook map didn't show us how to get to Zavala...only a mention. We finally figured out how to get there and I jokingly said that after all of that, "you watch, the park is going to be closed". I had no idea how powerful my prophecies could be.
So we instead took a little road that branced off that closed road and wound around on a dirt road till it, too, dead-ended. At that point we through in the towel, parked the car and hiked around in the woods. We kept commenting how absolutely quiet it was there in the woods...nothing but the sound of the wind in the tall pines. No birds. No squirrels. No other animal life that we could tell. And with good reason. Turns out it's turkey hunting season in east Texas and we were in turkey hunting territory! Good thing I was wearing a red sweater. As we were leaving the woods, we saw truck after truck after truck of camoflauged hunter pulling in and setting up shop.
