A Casualty

One of the things I love about Houston are the live oaks, many of which line the streets in some of the older and nicer parts of town. This particular avenue is right alongside Rice University. Live oaks keep their leaves year-round and only drop their old leaves as the new leaves come in and push them off.

Patron Saint of Pumpkins. I saw this sight while waiting at a light at the end of the live oak lane.

The pig took one for the team. I was housesitting for the Kutner's last weekend and finally succumed to temptation. I had been doing so incredibly well for the last 4 months! I had even vowed that I was NOT going to give into the treats that reside in the Kutner's kitchen. But then the craving hit for Protein-fortified Vitamin M, and it was unanimously decided that the pig had to die and offer up his pennies. He died for a good cause - and the guilt ended up not being so bad.

So since it was a Kutner weekend, I had to take my obligatory photos of their ever varying vegetation. I took most of these after giving them all a good watering.

I know what you're thinking. They're actually some grotesque mushrooms in one of the potted plants.

Don't know what kind of tree this is, but it reaches over from the neighbors yard. I'm imagining these are a real mess to clean once they ripen and drop off.

For whatever reason, the color of this particular flower is so intense, so ultra-violet, that my camera just would not pick it up! It just forever looked like it was glowing in my viewfinder, and even looks like its glowing a little now that I've loaded it. Bizarre.
