I love that phrase, "hunkering down". It's so....appropriate. That's Michelle hiding from the camera under the comforter. Her bed was set up there in front of the t.v. and mine was set up there at the end of the couch and her bed. At this point it was still fairly cool cause I had cranked the A/C as low as it would go to get the place as cold as I could before we did lose power. Michelle wasn't too happy about it, she had "icicles hanging off her nose", but it was still in the 90s outside and, it goes without saying, HUMID. It bought us that evenings comfort at least.
The first lit candle of the storm. It's out of focus cause the camera can't adjust to the low light without a flash - but a flash just ruins the whole concept of the shot :-)

Thankfully Michelle's blackberry never lost connection, so we were able to pull up radar to see where Ike was. This was him starting to make landfall. The eye officially made landfall in Galveston at 2:10am. We started having strong winds and rain at my place around 11 to 11:30, mostly just gusts and sporadic rain.
